I had a really great day at autocross yesterday where I was fast right off the bat, and got faster all day. I managed a 5th place out of a field of 54 cars, and 3rd out of the street tire cars. So, I figured I’d share some pictures of my Miata and the 4 cars/drivers who outran me.
5th (me) - #76 STS - 1991 Mazda Miata - 50.425
Me with a little oppo dialed in, my car is set up very very loose and is quite a handful :
4th - #
56 DP -
1994 Mazda Soloskate -
49.952
The “H alf Miata”, named because about 50% has been removed for lightness. On Formula Atlantic Hoosier slicks.
3rd - #94 AS - 1994 Dodge Viper RT/10 - 49.949
Possibly the smoothest driver in our region, his runs never look fast but always are.
2nd - #57 SM - 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX - 49.622
Driver finally got some RE71Rs to replace his Direzzas this season , has basically been untouchable since.
1st - #84 SSR - 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 - 48.384
National podium finisher, in a C6Z on Hoosiers... yeah, he’s real fast.
Further results:
and a car that wasn’t faster than me, but is too damn cool not to share :
1982 C-Prepared class Trans Am. 500+ NA horsepower on the biggest slicks I’ve ever seen. It spends more time sideways than it does pointed forward.
Ugh, I want to drive it sometime.

Nice! Also not surprised to see David Green in that list. He tends to land at or very
near to
the top of the heap pretty regularly in Topeka as well.

Yeah, I really need to get up to Topeka this year. I won a free entry to a Kansas Region event at the MiDiv convention and I really should go use it.

Impressive! I am doing my first autocross this weekend with my new Miata. I dont think I am going to be placing anywhere decently but I will at least go out and have fun. I am setup for track use and my tires really really need heat to get working. The Toyo RR is definitely not an autocross tire but it is bound to be better than my crappy all seasons on the daily wheels , especially if the weather is warm enough.
Seeing that image of the Subaru though has me wishing to go off the deep end and buy some RE71Rs for my STi. At least that car would be in the stock/street class (whatever that is for an STi). But I probably want to stick to my original plan of do not motorsport the subaru.

Don’t put the REs on the Subi, you’ll only get addicted...and get cone scuffs all over that nice white paint.

I did get the Falken 615k+ put on the car when I first bought it. I do kind of miss having a sticky tire like that. But I don’t miss that I barely got 15k out of them. That is not sustainable for a street driven car because I just drive too much. I think I made it like 9 months on those.
The bigger stoppage would be I’d need another set of wheels and I definitely dont want to spend that money either. Tire cost could be justified as saving treadwear on the “winter” tires. But I’d easily be spending $1k on wheels. That money is better spent on 5 track days for the Miata.
